Pharmacy Technician Bridging

The Pharmacy Technician Bridging courses are designed to provide supplementary education and training for pharmacy assistants currently working in the field, helping them meet the regulatory competencies required to write their national exams to become registered Pharmacy Technicians.

Our courses are an approved pathway with the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists. If you are from another province and considering our courses as a pathway to registration, please check with your provincial regulatory authority.

Exams and Fees for becoming a Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPhT)

(Note: Fees are subject to change annually.)

NBCP Student Registration Fee (one-time fee)

  • Cost: $69.00
  • When Required: Beginning Bridging Program

Liability Insurance

  • Cost: Approximately $75 when they obtain a membership with CAPT or NBPA or other insurance providers
  • Required to register as a student with NBCP
  • When Required: Beginning Bridging Program

Proof of Identity (to register as a student)

  • Cost: Fees vary depending on whether they use a Lawyer or Public Notary
  • Notarization Requirement: If mailing ID to NBCP, it must be notarized. Only Lawyers or Public Notaries are authorized to notarize ID for NBCP. Commissioners of Oaths are not accepted for this purpose.

Jurisprudence Exam (JE) with NBCP

  • Cost (regular sitting): $293.25
  • Cost (special sitting): $460
  • When Required: After completing Bridging program

First Aid and CPR Level C

  • Cost: Approx. $100 (prices vary between providers)
  • First Aid: Emergency, Workplace, or Standard First Aid
  • CPR: Level C
  • Not needed until they become an RPhT
  • Note, this is not needed as a student unless they complete an injection certification course. Currently, it is required as part of their final steps in becoming a RPhT

NBCP One-Time Registration Fee

  • Cost: $358.80
  • Required when all conditions for licensure is complete, and they are ready to become licensed RPhT after provincial and national exams are complete

Active Pharmacy Technician License (Annual Fee)

  • Cost: $681.95

PEBC - MCQ Exam

  • Cost: $575
  • Offered September & April
  • When Required: After completing Bridging program

PEBC OSPE Exam

  • Cost: $1215
  • Offered in September & April, with travel outside of the province involved
  • When Required: After completing Bridging program

NBPA – New Brunswick Pharmacist’s Association
RPhT – Registered Pharmacy Technician
PEBC – The Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada
CAPT – Canadian Association of Pharmacy Technicians (currently offers free student membership)
MCQ – Multiple Choice Qualifying Exam
OSPE – Objective Structured Performance Examination
JE – Provincial Jurisprudence Exam (fees will differ between provinces)
NBCP – New Brunswick College of Pharmacists



There is no set order for how/when students complete the 3 exams.

Students in NB must also complete a Structured Practical Evaluation for NBCP, which cannot happen until they have completed their program. There is no fee attached to this; however, it is a step in their process to becoming a RPhT.

Admission Requirements

  • Please Note: Regardless of courses completed, students must meet program admissions requirements , including High School Diploma or Adult High School Diploma or GED Diploma of High School Equivalency or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) or Essential Skills Achievement Pathway: Post-Secondary Entry High School Diploma.
  • Proof of a minimum 2000 hours of experience working as a pharmacy Assistant in a Canadian pharmacy within the last three (3) years.
  • Language proficiency requirement as per the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA).
  • Technology Requirements: A webcam is required for online proctoring/recording.
  • All admission requirements must be submitted within two weeks of the course start date to stephanie.mason@nbcc.ca.

Courses

Pharmacology

This course is designed to provide learners with an overview of pharmacological principles, including drug classifications, therapeutic uses, and the risks associated with medications. Learners explore the effects of medication on the body, conditions that may affect drug actions, and various treatment options.

Professional Practice

This course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective pharmacy practice, emphasizing ethics, professionalism, legal requirements, and the scope of practice for pharmacy technicians.

Management of Product Distribution

This course is designed to provide learners with essential knowledge and skills related to the safe and effective distribution of pharmaceutical products. Emphasizing quality assurance and risk management, learners explore various product distribution systems, inventory management practices, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Product Preparation

This course is designed to provide learners with the skills to safely and accurately prepare non-sterile and sterile pharmaceutical products. Emphasis is placed on safe practices, accurate calculations, and adherence to standards, legislation, and established policies and procedures.
