Discovering Independence Abroad: My Journey from Costa Rica to Canada

Jose Pablo González Porras

As an international student from Costa Rica, where I studied at a self-directed university. Through the ELAP program and my time in New Brunswick, especially in Saint John at the ºìÐÓÊÓƵ campus. I learned a lot. Not only about Canadian culture, but also about global culture and awareness. I met people from all around the world and I saw how different backgrounds come together to share ideas, stories and experiences.

I also learned what it’s like to wake up early and rely on public transportation, which was new for me. It came with small challenges, like managing my time around fixed bus schedules and planning my day better. Living in Canada also pushed me to be more independent, especially because it felt like a place where nobody really knows you, so you have to build your own routine and confidence.

The biggest thing this program gave me was the chance to see life through someone else’s eyes, to live a totally different reality from what I knew back home. I learned how to be independent in another country, how to move around on my own and how to connect with people thanks to networking events.

And my personal advice for future international student is: Enjoy it and make each day worth it. Go out, explore your city, try new foods, join clubs and say yes to new experiences even if you feel shy at first. Balance school with fun and build a simple routine so you don’t burn out. Every new friend, place and small adventure will help you grow and create memories you’ll keep forever.
